The Bishop of the Diocese of George, The Right Reverend Edwin Desmond Pockpass, has issued a pastoral letter addressing the escalating conflict in the Middle East and its human, moral, and spiritual implications.
In this deeply reflective message, the Bishop calls the Church to respond not with political partisanship or simplistic narratives, but through the lens of the Gospel of Jesus Christ. Drawing on Scripture and the example of Christ — who refused the sword, taught love of enemies, and proclaimed peace — the letter invites us into earnest prayer, theological reflection, embodied peacemaking, and steadfast Christian hope.
The Bishop reminds us that war is not an abstract political issue, but a human tragedy marked by the suffering of civilians, the destruction of homes and livelihoods, and the anguish of families. He also highlights the many people from our own region who live and work in the Middle East, making this conflict personal for our Diocese.
The pastoral mandate is clear:
- To pray intentionally and persistently for peace, the protection of civilians, wise leadership, and comfort for the grieving.
- To think theologically about conflict, measuring every action against the character of Christ.
- To embody peace within our own communities.
- To remain rooted in Christian hope, trusting in the sovereignty and faithfulness of God.
The Bishop has asked that intercessions for peace in the Middle East be offered in every parish across the Diocese in the weeks ahead, and that families include these intentions in their daily prayers.
